We kick into first gear at 8:30 AM, breaking out of Hanoi’s urban grid and steering north. The flat city landscape quickly gives way to rolling country hills before rising into massive, jagged limestone karsts. We bypass the commercial lanes, tracking a narrow, technical route through hidden tea plantations. By afternoon, the tarmac drops into the dense tropical canopy of Ba Be National Park. We park the bikes, swap our riding boots for sandals, and board a wooden boat to cruise the emerald waters of Ba Be Lake—exploring the massive Puong Cave and the rushing Dau Dang Waterfall—before pulling into the peaceful Tay ethnic village of Bo Lu around 5:00 PM to finish our day with a home-cooked meal and an overnight stay at a traditional family homestay.

Ba Be Lake – A National Treasure of Vietnam

We wake up to the clean scent of the forest and hit the tarmac early. Today’s route twists through remote mountain communities where life moves at a peaceful, timeless pace. By midday, a deep rumble echoes through the valleys as we approach Ban Gioc Waterfall, the crown jewel of Vietnam’s borderlands. Here, massive tiers of turquoise water plunge over the cliffside, sending up a cool mist that drifts right across the quay into China. We’ll step onto a bamboo raft to get close enough to feel the thunderous spray on our skin, then take a short ride up to Truc Lam Pagoda for a sweeping, panoramic view of the entire karst basin. Follow your guide's line as we ascend the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass - a dizzying ribbon of asphalt carved directly into a vertical cliff face, overlooking the emerald waters of the Nho Que River thousands of feet below. After stopping at the summit for photos that don't seem real, we’ll head down to the river bank for a peaceful one-hour boat cruise through the towering Tu San Canyon. We finish the day with a short, scenic run into the historic town of Dong Van, where you can stroll past centuries-old clay-brick H’mong homes.

If it's Sunday, our day begins amid the beautiful chaos of the local ethnic market, where H'mong, Dao, and Tay people gather in bright traditional dress to trade cattle and handmade textiles. From there, we navigate our machines down to Sa Phin village to step inside the historic H'mong King’s Palace (Vuong Palace), an architectural marvel built from wood and stone that blends classic Chinese design with local tribal artistry. The afternoon run takes us deep into the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, a UNESCO-protected landscape of endless, surreal black limestone formations. We’ll carve our way through the switchbacks of the Tham Ma and Bac Sum passes, stopping for a coffee at Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate to look down at the famous "Twin Mountains" before resting our engines in Ha Giang.

Today is a grand cross-country run that carries us from the rocky peaks of Ha Giang over to the alpine ridges of Lao Cai. After a smooth morning cruise along Route 2, your guide will point the pack onto a rustic, backcountry road toward Pho Rang. The landscape changes completely here, presenting a breathtaking canvas of deep green mountainsides and early rice terraces. After a local lunch, we’ll make a unique cultural stop right at the China-Vietnam Border River Gate in Lao Cai. The grand finale of the day is a sweeping, steady climb up to Sapa, an alpine retreat perched at 1,600 meters above sea level. Feel the air turn crisp and cool as we roll past cloud-wrapped mountains and vast terraced fields, checking into our stay by 4:00 PM.

The morning run offers an adventurous, high-octane climb up steep grades and sharp gravel-and-asphalt switchbacks as we push directly into the remote clouds of Ta Xua. By late afternoon, we reach the ultimate destination: the legendary Dinosaur Spine. This is a razor-thin mountain ridge trail with vertical drops plunging down into deep valleys on both sides, offering a surreal view as the late afternoon sun hits the sea of clouds below, before we pull into our local guesthouse near the ridge around 5:30 PM to park the machines and unpack for the night.

The mountain passes open up into the sprawling, dreamlike landscapes of the Moc Chau Plateau, where the tarmac cuts clean through endless rolling green tea hills and misty dairy pastures. After stopping to catch our breath and drink a hot local tea, we launch into a scenic afternoon descent. The craggy grey rock completely disappears, replaced by the lush, vibrant green flatlands of the Mai Chau Valley. We roll past traditional white Thai stilt houses and wide, flooded rice paddies, checking into our valley homestay by late afternoon.

Once a heavily bombed wartime supply network, it has been transformed into a smooth, flowing motorcycling paradise. The asphalt here is wide, fast, and light on commercial traffic. You will cruise past vast fields of sugarcane, watch water buffalo lazily cross rural paths, and weave through the traditional hamlets of the Muong and Thai tribes. By late afternoon, we roll into the quiet town of Tan Ky—historically recognized as the official Kilometer 0 and northern gateway of the wartime trail—checking into our hotel to rest after a 260 km run.

Today is our longest single run: a massive 280-kilometer push deeper into the historical core of the Truong Son mountain range. Your guide will share stories at our coffee stops along the mountain passes, detailing how North Vietnamese forces moved massive quantities of supplies down these exact ridges under heavy air restrictions. The traffic is practically non-existent, leaving you completely alone with the rhythm of your engine and the dense jungle landscape. By late afternoon, the terrain shifts into towering, ancient limestone karsts as we roll into Phong Nha National Park to check into our hotel.

We start the morning with an adrenaline rush at Dark Cave, kayaking across the Chay River and ziplining directly to the cave mouth before switching on our headlamps to trek through its tight, muddy subterranean chambers for a natural mud bath. After a hearty lunch, we trade adventure for sheer scale at Paradise Cave (Thien Duong)—the second-longest limestone cave on Earth. Walk through its colossal, cathedral-like chambers filled with towering stalactites illuminated by subtle floor lighting. We depart early to tackle the legendary Western Branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway. This is a highly technical, completely isolated strip of concrete that twists through deep jungle canopies, climbing past hidden waterfalls and remote mountain passes. Along the route, we'll pull over at a traditional Van Kieu ethnic minority village to learn about their isolated lifestyle deep in the interior. After a simple lunch at a roadside shack, we pass through the scenic Bong Lai Valley before arriving at the historic Khe Sanh Combat Base (Ta Con Airfield). Spend an hour walking the old airstrip, where abandoned U.S. tanks, artillery pieces, and shot-down helicopters sit as haunting monuments to one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War, before checking into our hotel in Khe Sanh town.

Ta Con Combat Base, a Former Military Site

A long, intensely historic day of riding that takes us from the mountains straight down to the Central Coast. Our first stop is The Rockpile, a solitary karst outpost used by the U.S. Marine Corps as a critical observation base. Next, we pay our respects at the Truong Son Martyrs' Cemetery before arriving at the historic Hien Luong Bridge at the 17th Parallel—the physical line that split North and South Vietnam for 21 years. From there, we ride to the coast to explore the mind-bending Vinh Moc Tunnels. This massive underground network was hand-carved by local villagers to survive heavy naval bombardment, housing entire families, kitchens, schools, and a maternity ward 30 meters beneath the earth. We close out the day with a beautiful coastal run past Cua Tung Beach and the vast Tam Giang Lagoon, rolling into the imperial city of Hue by evening.
